The first thing you should know about cheap formal dresses for summer is that they are not easy to find, particularly if one is

searching online. Most online formal summer dresses cost over $200 and they can run as high as $500.

For this reason, you may fair better just heading down to your local department store, browsing some summer dress sales and buying directly off the rack. However, there are at least two online shopping sites that do offer cheap formal summer dresses, but before delving into that arena, consider the following.

Before You Shop

Before purchasing your perfect formal summer dress, it may be helpful to think about where you’ll be wearing it to. Is it for a summer party, or a graduation party? A wedding or a garden party? Thinking about where the party will take place can help you narrow down the selection, and ultimately, choose the best dress.

For example, if the dress is for a summer wedding, you may want a fabric that's more light and airy than a heavy metallic one. If it's for a graduation party where there’ll be plenty of young people, then it may be more appropriate to choose a look that’s more trendy or "edgy."

Explore Color

Summer is the perfect time to play with color. The flowers are in full bloom, and the sun is shining brilliantly, so why not choose a dress that’s equally spectacular? If you are wary of color, don’t fret. One of the most fantastic things about the summer months is that many of the fabric colors are more sheer and gentle than their richly hued winter counterparts.

For example, you may think nothing of wearing a deep berry color in the winter, only to find that in the summer the shade is too "heavy." The best way to alleviate this dilemma is to choose a softly colored lavender dress. The same can be said of the color green. In winter, a deep forest hue may look best, but in summer, a jewel emerald tone may be more appropriate.

How to Wear Cute Summer Dresses

When it's summer, you can wear your summer dresses with shimmer lotion and your favorite pair of strappy sandals. That's the beauty of cute summer dresses—it's very easy to get dressed and look put together in a short period of time. At night when the temperatures drop just a bit, you can put on a light cardigan and still be comfortable.

But what do you do when the temperatures drop a lot? Do you have to retire all of your cute summer dresses, banish them to another closet or a box under the bed? Not really. While you may want to leave the white, floral dresses that scream summertime in the closet during the colder months, you can still get some use out of your most versatile (in color and pattern) dresses.

Some sleeveless styles lend themselves to winter fashion in that they look great with a long-sleeve shirt underneath. If it's too fitted for that, you can throw on a heavier cardigan than the one you used on those summer nights earlier in the year, or even go for a shawl. What about your legs? Cover them with opaque tights and wear your boots.
